About the Course

Finance for Everyone: Decisions will introduce you to the workings of the free markets and the foundations of finance. You will learn how free markets and their “creative destruction” provide the architecture for the global economy and how those same markets move money in ways that create and destroy wealth. Your financial toolkit will include timeless concepts like compounding, discounting, annuities, effective interest rates, and more. You will also learn how to simplify important financial calculations and apply that knowledge to real-life decisions that can influence everything from how you pay for your car to where you live. Through peer review you will publish your view on an issue important to you. You will also discover how your applied decisions connect to bigger questions relating to changing market conditions as you prepare for the second course in F4E: Markets....

Why I Took This Course: As someone with a budding interest in finance but no formal background, I wanted to understand how financial principles shape everyday decisions—from personal budgeting to evaluating business risks. This course delivered exactly that, breaking down complex concepts into relatable, real-world applications. How It Helped Me: Demystified Financial Jargon: Terms like "opportunity cost," "time value of money," and "risk diversification" are now tools I use confidently. Practical Frameworks: The decision-making models (e.g., cost-benefit analysis) helped me evaluate choices like renting vs. buying a home or assessing investment risks. Global Perspective: Case studies on currency fluctuations and fiscal policies showed how macro-level finance impacts individuals. What I Loved: Engaging Teaching Style: The instructors used clear examples (e.g., student loans, retirement planning) to make abstract ideas tangible. Interactive Assignments: Scenario-based exercises forced me to apply concepts, solidifying my learning. Inclusivity: No prior finance knowledge was needed, yet the content never felt oversimplified. Constructive Feedback: While the course excelled at foundational topics, I’d have loved a deeper dive into behavioral finance (e.g., how psychology influences spending/investing). Final Takeaway: This course transformed how I approach financial decisions—both personally and professionally. I now see finance not as a rigid set of rules, but as a lens to navigate trade-offs in life. Highly recommended for anyone seeking financial literacy! Why This Works: Balanced: Highlights strengths while offering polite suggestions. Outcome-Focused: Emphasizes how you’ll use what you learned. Authentic: Reflects your unique perspective (e.g., global examples). Need Adjustments? Let me know if you’d like to tailor it further!

One of the most valuable things I’ve purchased is my phone, which I use daily for studying and accessing online courses. The financial decision to buy it came with several repercussions—both positive and challenging. On the positive side, it opened up access to education, improved my productivity, and allowed me to continue learning even when schools were closed. However, purchasing the phone meant using most of my savings, which limited my ability to handle unexpected expenses later on. This decision highlighted an important financial lesson: while investments in tools that support education and personal development are often worthwhile, they also require careful budgeting and long-term planning. In future, I would consider setting aside an emergency fund before making large purchases, even for essential items.
